Dr. Sonya Robinson is originally from Queens, New York. In May 1995, she obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia. In 1998, she obtained a Master of Social Work from Howard University in Washington, D.C. In February 2013, she obtained a Doctorate of Philosophy in Psychology (with a concentration of Educational Psychology) from Walden University in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
She has over 27 years of experience in child welfare as an Adoption Social Worker and as a Supervisory Interstate Compact on the Placement of Children (ICPC) Specialist with the District of Columbia Child and Family Services Agency. Within these positions, she understood the physical, medical, and mental health needs of children and ensured that they were placed in appropriate placements. Dr. Robinson also has experience completing home studies for families who wish to increase their family through the process of adoption or custody. Her research interests include the psychological well-being of the members of the adoption triad, especially adoptees.
For fun, Sonya enjoys movies, plays, spending time with family and friends, collecting elephants, and taking vacations.

Home Study/pre-placement Assessment
A home study/pre-placement assessment is an opportunity to investigate if adoption is the best option for you, your family and a child. I like to describe it as a learning experience. You get to learn about the adoption issues and the agency gets to learn about your ideas about parenting, your family life and your abilities to provide for the needs of a child.

A Domestic Adoption
A domestic adoption is completed through an agency, attorney or direct placement in the United States. If your child is born outside of NC, an interstate compact must be completed. An international adoption is when the child in born outside of the United States. The finalization of the adoption occurs in many of the foreign countries while for other countries the adoption must be finalized in the NC courts. There are pros and cons to each option.

Adoption Criteria
The social worker has certain criteria that must be included in the home study/ assessment as set out in the State Statutes and if you are hoping to adopt internationally, each international country has its own requirements.
Licensure
We are licensed in North Carolina. It is important for you to look for an agency that is licensed in your home state.
